A LITTLE OF THE HISTORY OF THE IMAGES

Louis Prang was a German exile who arrived in Boston around 1850 where he went to work for an engraver. He subsequently went into business with a partner to create lithographs, specializing in prints of buildings and towns in Massachusetts and becoming known for maps of the Civil War. In England Sir Henry Cole had invented the first ever Christmas card in 1843, with a new color printing process in the 1860s allowing the commercial production of cards in England.
Realising the potential of the market in 1875 Louis Prang printed his first Christmas cards and exported them to London. They were a huge success with more than 5 million Christmas cards a year being printed by 1881. HIs factory became a tourist attraction and he even conducted the tours by himself!
The minute I saw these little images I fell in love with them and knew I had to do something with them. They are typically small being hand painted to fit on a postcard at the time but still very endearing. I hope you enjoy them!
